Martyn jackson Music Background

Martyn Jackson A.R.C.M.

Professional Flautist and Flute Tutor.

Martyn studied flute at the Royal College of Music London with Edward Walker a former principal flute with the London Symphony Orchestra, principal piccolo with the BBC Symphony and member of the Philarmonia Flute section. Prior to his move to London he was taught by Margaret Bailey a local teacher in his home town of Doncaster, South Yorkshire; she had studied with both Geoffery Gilbert and Peter Lloyd at the Royal Northern College in Manchester. The product of this input in his formative years gave him a unique balance between english professionalism and the french style of playing that at this time was newly introduced to this country.

Performing

During his time in London, Martyn was employed as a commercial session musician, while also playing orchestrally and in the theatre. Continuing to perform after his move to Cornwall, he played at the opening gala of the Hall for Cornwall as well as for a number of productions of both the Duchy Opera and Ballet. Martyn has always specialized in doubling, playing both piccolo and alto flute, as well as clarinet and tenor saxophone. At present he is only playing members of the flute family professionally.

While working as a flute tutor he taught at the R.C.M. junior department and the famous Hill House international junior school in Knightsbridge, along with several both private and state secondary schools. After his move to Cornwall in 1990 he became a member of the woodwind team of the county music service, while also teaching at Truro School and Bolitho School in Penzance.
